               WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Alicia Cantu Gomez, who  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        died May 1, 2015, at the age of 87; and | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               WHEREAS, Alicia Gomez was born in Brownsville on July 17,  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        1927, the only child of Manuel Cantu Lapierre and Guadalupe  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        Garcia Gomez; she graduated from Villa Maria High School; and | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               WHEREAS, Shortly after her graduation, she married Mariano  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        Chapa Garcia; they raised four children together and were blessed  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        with five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               WHEREAS, She instilled in her children the values of  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        honesty, fairness, unity, and love; she believed strongly in the  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        importance of education, and she endured many sacrifices to  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        ensure that her children were educated in private schools and  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        that they went on to become university graduates; and | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her generous spirit,  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        forgotten; and | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               WHEREAS, She was the beloved matriarch of her large and  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        loving extended family, and she leaves behind memories that will  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        be treasured forever by all who were privileged to share in her  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        life; now, therefore, be it | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        family of Alicia Cantu Gomez; and, be it further | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
               RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in  | 
      
      
        | 
           
			 | 
        memory of Alicia Cantu Gomez. |
